Origin of the fabric and pattern
This coat is made from 600 g carded wool cloth, a heavy, dense fabric designed to withstand winter weather. The black velvet collar contrasts with the matte texture of the cloth and recalls the aesthetic of Victorian-era British overcoats.
Inspiration for the silhouette
The Chesterfield coat appeared in England in the 1840s, under the impetus of George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield. Unlike the frock coats and overcoats of the time, it was distinguished by its simple, straight cut, a collar often covered in black velvet and either a concealed or double-breasted fastening. Considered the first modern coat, it was designed to be worn over a city suit without the military or equestrian embellishments that characterised previous coats.
First adopted by the British aristocracy, it became a staple of business attire at the turn of the 20th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, its image was cemented among London and New York bankers, becoming a symbol of seriousness and understated elegance. The black velvet collar, in particular, remains the most classic signature feature of the Chesterfield coat.
